About the hotel
Monaci delle Terre Nere is located on the edge of Etna National Park, about 14 miles from Catania in an ideal position perched above the Mediterranean. This 40-acre estate consists of a farm and vineyard where there is no shortage of cozy corners to sit and marvel at the surrounding orchards and gardens. Dating from the 1800s, this now eco-friendly property was originally inhabited by monks from the order of Sant'Anna.
The hotel's thirteen guestrooms and Suites are much plusher than when monks once inhabited them. Each room is decorated in a modern-meets-ancient style: exposed beams made from Etna chestnut wood adorn the ceilings, while contemporary art embellishes the walls which happen to be composed of the area's volcanic rock. No detail is spared in decor of this chic boutique hotel. Every room has a special feature ranging from a mountain/sea view to a fireplace or private patio. Even the minibar is well thought out, offering local wines and beers.
Nature lovers can take advantage of the hotel's al fresco yoga classes, swimming pool, organic farm and holistic massage program. If the great outdoors don't beckon, the hotel also has a billiards room and Wi-Fi. In addition to its special amenities, the hotel also boasts an organic restaurant located on their panoramic terrace. There one can gaze at the sea bellow while savoring traditional Sicilian meals that come from a zero kilometer range.
The hotel chef has a particular gift for transforming local fresh fish, vegetables, herbs and homegrown olive oil into high quality dishes. These heavenly meals are usually accompanied by some of the owners' favorite wines from Mount Etna, leaving a lasting memory of the transcendental time you spent at Monaci delle Terre Nere.

The 20 rooms and suites in the main villa and a series of outbuildings are stylish dens and unique in décor, some with wood-burning stoves, exposed lava stone walls and weathered ceiling beams, others fresh and bright, with contemporary artworks playing off against Sicilian antiques.
The ‘Dependence’ suites give onto lawns and the estate’s extensive kitchen gardens and orchards, with plants carefully labelled. Rooms have no televisions or phones – a deliberate choice, as the experience is all about tuning into nature. Fireplaces in many rooms reflect the fact that this is one of the few Sicilian country hotels that is open all year.
Offering free Wi-Fi, the chic rooms also have vineyard or sea views, minibars and garden patios. Some provide exposed lava rock walls or beamed ceilings. Suites add separate living areas with pull-out sofas; some feature mountain views, fireplaces, and outdoor hot tubs or showers.
