La Foce, located on a hill overlooking the UNESCO-listed Val d'Orcia, has been an important settlement ever since the Etruscan times; some archeological findings are traced all the way back to 7th century BC. In 1924 the Antonio Origo family purchased the estate with a goal to bring progress and prosperity to this little corner of Tuscany. Today, Origo's daughter, Benedetta, along with her four children runs this beautifully restored property that is renowned for its magnificent garden designed by the English architect Cecil Pinsent in the 1920s and 30s.
The estate consists of the main villa, the medieval castle Castelluccio, the hamlet Belvedere, the fortified farm building Chiarentana and 15 farmhouses scattered throughout the property. La Foce's farmhouses have been beautifully restored, divided into 16 apartments available for vacation rentals. Each house features a fully equipped kitchenette and an outdoor pool, along with an unbeatable view of the surrounding valley.
Il Dopolavoro La Foce is the estate's restaurant, frequented by both locals and guests vacationing in one of its apartments, cottages or villas. Serving traditional Tuscan dishes made with fresh produce from their own vegetable garden and enhanced with La Foce's extra-virgin olive oil, the quality of the food matches its exquisite taste.
The estate also features a tennis court and a playground for smaller children at Chiarentana. The chapel at Castelluccio has original 16th century frescoes and is still used for special events such as christenings and weddings. In the castle's courtyard, at the end of July, one can enjoy chamber music concerts as part of the Incontri in Terra di Siena festival. Garden tours are given every Wednesday afternoon so that guests can appreciate the unique harmony between buildings, landscape and the garden itself.
