The City of Romeo and Juliet, nestled on the Adige River about halfway between Milan and Venice: this is Verona. Here in one of Northern Italy's most noteworthy gems, you will spend three hours with a private guide discovering Verona's medieval heart.
Starting off the tour is the ancient Roman amphitheater, the Arena. This well-preserved amphitheater was constructed at the beginning of the 1st Century A.D. and is famous for its grand opera performances and sold-out concerts. Afterwards, a stroll through Piazza delle Erbe reveals the core of Verona's historic center: a rectangular piazza that once held the Roman Forum. Standouts on this medieval square include the Merchant's House and the antique Roman sculpture reused as part of the Madonna Verona fountain.
Next, walking under the Arco della Costa (it gets its name from the huge rib bone of a whale that hangs from the arch), you'll find yourself in Piazza dei Signori. A statue of Dante marks the center of this small piazza where the city's government once resided. Among Verona's most powerful rulers was the notorious Della Scala family whose monumental gothic tombs are masterpieces in marble.
No one can visit Verona without seeing the sites connected to Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers. The tour ends with Juliet's and Romeo's houses. Built in the 14th century, Romeo's house is protected by a high defensive wall (perfect for keeping out enemy-families!). Juliet's house is situated nearer to Piazza delle Erbe; in the courtyard, a bronze statue of the girl stands underneath the famous balcony, amid letters and graffiti from couples from all over the world declaring their eternal love for one another.
Please note that entrance tickets are NOT included in the total price and must be paid in cash on site.
Sites Included: Arena, Piazza delle Erbe and the Merchant's House, Piazza dei Signori, Romeo's House, tombs and palace of the Scala family, and Juliet's House.
