Undoubtedly, Venice's uniqueness stems from its means of transportation: maritime traffic is what has made this beautiful city run since its emergence many centuries ago. Inhabitants have always moved around on different kinds of boats that have become the true symbol and essence of Venice. During this private rowing lesson, you will participate in an authentic Venetian experience that few tourists get to try. In these 90 minutes of unforgettable fun, you will learn the basics of the voga alla veneta, the traditional Venetian rowing style, while at the same time having the opportunity to appreciate the historical and truly traditional aspects of Venice.
You will feel just like a real gondolier as you stand up and row both at the prow and at the stern. You will first start by testing out the movement, without putting the craft in motion. Then you will traverse the gorgeous side canals of the Cannaregio district and, after you have become confident, daringly enter the open lagoon.
The lessons will be held in rare, hand-crafted wooden craft called batela coda di gambero ('shrimp-tailed'). These beautiful batele are particularly adapted for first-time rowers; they're quite spacious but more stable than gondole, and also represent one of the most common historical Venetian craft. Indeed, 18th century masterpieces by great painters such as Carpaccio and Canaletto picture Venice's canals filled with these versatile, functional boats.
Want to break away from the usual touristic beaten path? A Venetian rowing lesson is your best option to do that while acquiring an insider's view into the authentic soul of Venice.
We recommend scheduling your lesson early in your stay, just in case the weather doesn't cooperate (rain or wind).
|# of People||Price|
|2 people||$67.00 per person|
|3 people||$63.00 per person|
|4 people||$56.00 per person|
We recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing and flexible shoes. On summer afternoons, it can be very warm, so bring a hat, perhaps an umbrella, and some water with you. When it is cool, layers are the key, because when you row you will warm up immediately; when you sit and ride while your companion rows, you will cool off just as quickly.
Please note that the price is based on the number of people in the boat, whether they row or not.
In case of sudden high tides or rain, the lesson will not take place. Your instructor will attempt to reschedule your lesson, but if he has to cancel definitively, we will refund the payment minus a $40 administration fee.
The boats hold up to four people; five are possible, if the kids are under the age of 10.
