Begin by meeting the golden lion that stands guard over Palazzo Vecchio in Piazza della Signoria. This crenellated fortress-palace still serves as Florence's City Hall, 800 years after it was built.
Then you'll make your way to Orsanmichele to see the 14th century marble statue of a rearing horse being shod by a medieval blacksmith. In the colorfully frescoed Oratory of San Martino dei Buonomini where you'll learn the story of the knight in shining armor that shares his cloak with a poor beggar.
Be sure to pet the nose of the wild pig that crouches outside the Straw Market. Legend has it that by doing so, you are sure to return to Florence.
On the narrow streets around the Ponte Vecchio, you will see lots of towers dating from the Middle Ages and maybe even climb one. The tour also includes a stop for gelato at one of Florence's oldest ice cream parlors where you'll get to taste the real thing.

Our tour was perfect for our 10 year old. By taking the tour, we saw parts of Florence we would never have found ourselves. Most of the tour was away from the crowds so we really got to see what Florence is like and learn about its history.
