This half-day walking tour of the archaeological excavations at Pompeii introduces you to life in the ancient Roman Empire before the disastrous volcanic eruption of 79 AD.
With this half-day walking tour of these amazing archaeological excavations you will set off on a journey to explore the mystery of Pompeii and the life of people in the Roman Empire.
On August 23rd, 79 AD, Pompeii looked like any other bustling, prosperous ancient city but just three days later, on August 26th, the fiery lava and ash of Mt. Vesuvius made the city fall silent and literally vanish from the face of the earth. Gradually grass and vines covered the land where the town once stood and the local people eventually forgot even the name "Pompeii".
For more than 1600 years, Pompeii remained buried until it was rediscovered in 1748. This discovery struck the imagination of people all across Europe and, suddenly, the classical world was once more fashionable. Philosophy, art, architecture, literature and even fashion drew inspiration from the discoveries that were made in Pompeii. The Neoclassical movement was born. Now, more than 1900 years after that fateful August morning, we are learning more and more about the last days of Pompeii.

I just wanted to let Select Italy know that on June 2nd myself, my husband and two of our friends had a private guided tour with Agostino Cappiello. He was a wonderful, personable and extremely knowledgable guide. I would highly recommend him to anyone wanting a private guide in Pompeii.
Our guide was terrific and completely brought the ruins to life. You could certainly imagine the chariots and people as he told stories. We also were allowed to go places the regular visitors could not. It was awesome! Thanks
Our guide was excellent. He was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and catered toward his audience which consisted of two 70 year olds, two forty year olds and one 10 year old. Additionally, the booking staff was very helpful. We got bumped off of our flight to Rome and had to delay the tour by one day. The staff accommodated all of our needs. We used your services last time we were in Europe and will use them the next time too.
On August 27th 2009 I had a private tour of Pompeii with Select Italy. Our guide was excellent and extremely knowledgeable on the ruins of Pompeii. We even got an exclusive tour of the Roman bath house that is limited to only a few people per day. It was incredible to see everything. There are audio guides available, however I believe that the one-on-one attention was invaluable and I learned things about the region that I will never forget. Recommend this tour.
This one one of the few guided tours we did in Italy but it was worth every Euro. Our guide was knowledgeable and funny and he kept two easily-bored teenagers completely enthralled. He also took us to some areas not open to the general public. The three-hour time was just about right to see everything but not so long that you are completey exhausted. Pompeii is a big place with a lot to see and almost no signage so having a guide, especially a really good one, is almost a necessity.
