    The Appia Antica

The Appia Antica

  • City: Rome
  • Duration: Approximately 3 - 3.5 hours

Stroll along the Appian Way, built in 312 BC and considered ancient Rome?s ?Queen of Roads,? on a 3-hour private excursion to this fascinating archaeological park.

Overview

Regina Viarum -- Queen of the Roads -- this is what the Ancient Romans called the Appian Way. Built in 312 BC, it was the first Roman road to be named after the magistrate that was responsible for its construction. It was adorned with sumptuous villas and monumental tombs belonging to important Roman families. Today, the first few miles are part of a fascinating archaeological park that maintains the romantic atmosphere of its past.

The tour starts from Porta San Sebastiano, the largest and best-preserved gate in the Aurelian Wall. It houses a lovely museum illustrating the history of the wall, allowing visitors to walk on the wall itself and enjoy the wonderful views. Driving along the ancient Appian Way, the tour continues to the suburban palace built for the Emperor Maxentius; it includes a very well preserved circus for chariot races. Last stop is the monumental Tomb of Cecilia Metella, one of the most famous landmarks of the Roman Campagna. En-route will be a visit to either the Catacombs of San Callisto or the Catacombs of San Sebastiano.

We did the Appian Antica tour on Tuesday morning, September 11th. Simona was our tour guide and she was --excellent--. She was very knowledable and made our tour very interesting. She was friendly and made us feel very comfortable during our tour. Simona is a very educated woman who has a firm grasp of ancient history and culture. She has a great skill to communicate with her guests in a way that makes the tour interesting and fund. We had a very enjoyable three hours with her and we learned a lot. We highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in learning about the ancient times and having fun at the same time. The scenery was outstanding also!! Ask for Simona!!
