3-Hour, Skip-the-Line Tour: Come and see the most magnificent monuments in ancient Rome!
In the year 27 BC, Augustus became Rome's first emperor, and in his memoirs he proudly wrote: "I found a city of stone and bricks; now I leave it to you remade in marble." It is the monumental ruins and imposing buildings that remain from the Eternal City's glorious past that are the focus of this fascinating walking tour that starts with the most famous of them all, the Colosseum.
Begun by the Emperor Vespasian in 72 AD, this elliptical amphitheater was capable of seating more than 50,000 spectators. It was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts and executions.
After marveling at its vast interior, you'll pass by the triumphal arches of Constantine and you will enter the area of the grass-covered Palatine Hill.
The legend says that this is the place where the twin brothers, Romulus and Remus, were suckled by a she-wolf. Here the Emperor Augustus made the Palatine his official power center, thereby initiating a building boom in which many lavish imperial palaces were constructed.
Walking down from the Palatine Hill as you enter the Roman Forum you will admire the Arch of Titus. The Forum has been the center of Roman public life for centuries: it was the site of temples, the Senate house, law courts and numerous monuments commemorating the city's great men.

Thanks to Giulia, our guide, our tour was amazing. She engaged with our 8 and 9 year old sons and our 70 year old parents. It was informative and awe inspiring. She is well spoken and highly educated. We loved every minute!
Our guide, Giovanna, was super! She spoke English well, was very personable and extremely knowledgeable. The tour was amazing and afterward, she directed our family to the perfect non-touristy place for dinner. The day was extremely enjoyable because of Giovanna!
Our guide, Fiorenza spent an entire afternoon taking my family (4 adults and 2 kids) through the Roman Forum and to the Pantheon. She was absolutely wonderful, describing the historical sites, surrounding neighborhoods, and political figures in Italy into the 20th Century. You can read books and walk through the ruins on your own, or you can actually experience the times and events with someone like Fiorenza. We were very happy with our tour, and amazed when Fiorenza offered to meet with us the following day b/c when we got to the Pantheon we couldn't go inside. (We were there the day Pope Francis was ordained and they closed the Pantheon early for a service for visiting dignitaries.) Unfortunately, we had to leave Rome the following day. But we will be back, and we will book another tour with Select Italy.
We spent an entire day with Piera, our guide for both the Power & Glory of Rome and the Vatican Museum tours. Besides being highly informative, it was a lot of fun. Piera is amazing!
Both of the above tours were booked with the same guide, Piera Pira, who was early to meet us for the tours in Rome. She was so very personable, extremeley knowledgeable, patient, spoke clearly, answered all of our questions and took alot of time with us on the above tours. Both my husband and the other gentleman on the tour are hard of hearing, and she was very understanding to speak so they could hear what she was sharing. She gave alot of history of Rome and Italy so we walked away from these tours with alot of knowledge. I would highly recommend Select Italy for their organization and especially Piera for her enthusiasm, knowledge and patience with our small group. She was awesome! Thank you very much Select Italy and Piera!
