Masterpieces of Genoa: The Aristocratic Contributions

Masterpieces of Genoa: The Aristocratic Contributions

  • City: Liguria (Italian Riviera), Genoa
  • Duration: Approximately 3 - 3.5 hours

Follow the labyrinth of alleys through Genoa's historic city center on this half-day walking tour that ends on the Strada Nuova, a UNESCO-listed street lined with palaces built by the local nobility.

Overview

Genoa was a major European powerhouse from the mercantile empire of the Middle Ages until the 17th century because of its strategic position on the Mediterranean Sea. The financial supremacy of Genoa in Europe was aided by and benefited the aristocratic families of the epoch who grew ever more powerful as time passed. A testimony of their wealth is evident in the private palaces, squares and churches they constructed.

The best way to understand the glorious history of Genoa is by walking through its squares, from the Medieval Piazza San Matteo - still owned by the Doria family - to Piazza DeFerrari, the modern-day heart of the city.

During this tour, you will also visit Porta Soprana, one of two existing 12th century gates to the city and glimpse from the outside at the Carlo Felice Theater, which was rebuilt following its destruction during WWII. The tour will conclude on Via Garibaldi, formerly known as Strada Nuova, a wide, monumental street that is lined with splendid palaces.
