Spend a half day or a full day exploring the riches of Sicily's capital city: the glittering mosaics, the splendid Teatro Massimo and the colorful outdoor food market of Ballaro'.
Besides its amenable climate, natural harbor enclosed by a blue sea and outstanding cuisine, the city of Palermo boasts centuries of incredible history in which the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Saracens, Normans, Spanish and the Kingdom of Naples all played a part.
The first stop for both the full-day and half-day versions of this tour is Teatro Massimo, the biggest opera house in Italy and the third largest in all of Europe! This beautiful example of the Neo-classical style in architecture is renowned for its perfect acoustics.
Walking along the famous Via Maqueda will lead you to an intersection built in the 17th century that divides the city into four sections; called the Quattro Canti, it became the center of Baroque Palermo. Here, wealthy religious orders built magnificent churches and decorated them with the intricate marble inlay known as "mischio."
The Norman church of Santa Maria dell'Ammiraglio, known as La Martorana, boasts splendid Byzantine mosaics executed in the 12th century. After a peek at the small churches of San Cataldo comes Palermo's lofty Cathedral. It was founded in 1184 and houses the medieval tombs of the emperors and other royal figures.
The half-day tour ends here while the full-day tour will continue on to Palermo's oldest outdoor food market, Ballaro'. Here you can take a lunch break, choosing from an array of traditional Sicilian specialties. After lunch, you will head to the mosaic-encrusted Cappella Palatina, one of the most beautiful royal chapels in existence.
As a spectacular finish to your day of discovery, you will go by car to the hilltop town of Monreale that overlooks the fertile valley of the Conca d'Oro (Golden Basin) where Palermo is situated. Famed for its glorious golden mosaics, Monreale Cathedral is the finest Norman building in Sicily. Its interior is embellished with almost 70,000 square feet of glittering glass mosaics, arranged in tiers; an enduring sight that you will not soon forget.
