Discover historic and culinary Naples in this half-day tour that takes you from the seaside Castel Nuovo to the Teatro San Carlo opera house to the city?s most famous pizzerias and pastry shops.
The historic center of Naples is a feast for the eyes and the ears. Full of local color, its narrow lanes harbor over 2,400 years of precious artworks that rival those of any other European capital. Castel Nuovo is the starting point for this walking tour; a turreted medieval castle facing out to sea, it is one of the city's main architectural landmarks. Not far away is one of the world's oldest opera houses, Teatro San Carlo. The covered shopping arcade of Galleria Umberto leads to Piazza Plebiscito, dominated by the long facade of the Royal Palace where the Bourbon kings once lived.
Piazza del Gesu' is the site of two of the most beautiful churches in town. After a peek at the exuberant Baroque interior of the church of Gesu' Nuovo, you cross the piazza to enter a totally different world: the austere, medieval spirituality of the Franciscan convent of Santa Chiara. It was begun in 1310 to house the tombs of the Angevin rulers. You'll be enchanted by the nun's cloister and garden, adorned with colorful majolica tiles painted with scenes of daily life in the 18th century.
Proceeding down the wide street known as the "Spaccanapoli" (Split Naples), you pass by some of the city's most famous pizzerias and pastry shops on the way to Via San Gregorio Armeno. The street of the celebrated Nativity scene artisans is crowded all year round, not just at Christmastime. At the end of Spaccanapoli stands the impressive Duomo where the Treasure of San Gennaro is kept. Flasks containing the saint's blood can be found in an ornate chapel in the right-hand aisle. Three times a year the blood miraculously liquefies, which is considered to be a good omen by the Neapolitans.
