When you catch the first glimpse of Gubbio coming from Perugia, through the rolling hills that separate it from the Tiber Valley, you get the feeling that you are about to enter a real medieval citadel, developed around the towering, crenellated castle known as the Palazzo dei Consoli.
On this private walking tour, you will discover how Gubbio evolved from the ancient Umbrians until today, and see some of the beautiful, hand-painted ceramics for which the town is known.
The tour starts from the current main square at the foot of the hill, from where you will slowly climb up to the Piazza Grande and the Palazzo dei Consoli, traversing the straight streets that follow the Roman layout and the winding alleys of the Middle Ages. Part of the route follows the Camignano brook that provided water to the town's craftsmen during the 13th and 14th centuries. A stop is made at the little church of San Francesco to admire statues of Gubbio's three patron saints, as well as in the impressive, vaulted spaces of the Palazzo dei Consoli.
Next is the medieval gatehouse of Porta Romana. It was restored in 1990 and now houses a precious collection of ceramics, including three by the renowned Maestro Giorgio. The tour finishes with a stroll along the town's main street, Corso Garibaldi, where you will see several stunning, noble Renaissance facades.
