This tour will take you to Venice's most famous monuments and coffeeshops so you can find out how the history of coffee and its traders is woven into the fabric of the city.
Venice was built on the success of its traders, who introduced all sorts of exotic products and flavors to the European public. This private tour will introduce you to the highlights of Venetian architecture, along with the history and flavors of coffee as it is served in the city's cafes.
The tour starts in Saint Mark's Square, where you will visit three historic eighteenth-century cafes sheltered under the square's arcades. As you are in one of the most famous squares in the world, you will take some time to view the highlights of the location: the Doge's Palace and the majestic Saint Mark's Basilica, with its exquisite Byzantine mosaics and architecture. You will then walk towards the lively neighborhood around the Rialto Bridge. You will have a chance to enjoy Venetian specialties at the Rialto Market, a lively center of commerce, buzzing with vendors selling fresh fish, vegetables, and other goods--the combination of sights and smells is a uniquely Venetian experience.
You will continue your walk along the iconic Grand Canal, with its many Renaissance palaces and bustling boat traffic, and stop at the Caffe' del Doge for a pick-me-up. Here you will get a short history of coffee in Venice, as well as a tasting of three coffee varieties: Ethiopian, which first arrived in the city in the seventeenth century, and both a smoother and a bolder Italian blend. As accompaniment to the caffe' you will have typical Venetian cookies, as well as some house specialities: the Giacometto (Espresso shot with soft chocolate and cream), the Cremino (overlapping layers of dense chocolate and custard topped off with whipped cream) and the traditional Cappuccino. The tasting is shared between two people, making it the perfect experience for couples and friends looking to indulge in some of the best Venetian delicacies!
