This full-day culinary expedition will introduce you to the wonderful world of truffles and will give you a taste of two of Italy's most festive wines. No gourmet morsel is as exotic and luxurious as the white truffle - il tartufo bianco. These delicacies, which can cost thousands of dollars per pound, grow only in the wild and can only be found by expert foragers aided by highly trained dogs.
Starting from and returning to your hotel in the Langhe area, this tour will take you to the heart of the truffle's earthy home, in the hills of the Monferrato region. You will meet a trifulau and you'll learn about the area's food traditions and local truffle varieties. Armed with this knowledge, you'll head out with your guide and his inseparable dogs on your very own truffle hunt.
Alba, world famous for its association with tartufi bianchi (white truffles), will be up next. Here you'll have some free time for lunch. Afterwards you'll visit a renowned Barbaresco producer. This fine violet-colored red wine, is considered to be one of the great "B"s of Piedmont, along with Barolo and Barbera. A tour of a local winery and a wine tasting will conclude the day.

Susanne Bayer, our gracious host and guide met us at our hotel in Asti on the morning of Oct. 19, 2011. We spent a wonderful day with her. She has a very broad knowledge of the area and its many interests and varied sights, the history and also the local food and wine. We thoroughly enjoyed our time with Susanne and she took very good care of us, spoke excellent English and was intuitive of our interests and also what we were capable of accomplishing in one day. The little restaurant (Rossobarollo)that she gently suggested was absolutely delightful and we had our first taste of fresh white truffles there. Our truffle hunting with George and his dog Diana (and another dog - name?) at La Casa del Trifulau was great (just not long enough!) and we were thrilled to find truffles. We enjoyed both Natale and his brother George and the whole experience with them and with Susanne. It was good to taste fresh truffles again at the end of the "hunt." The winery tour was also very good and we cannot say enough about how well the whole day was organized and how Susanne made it so very interesting and also relaxed and not rushed at any time. As well, she tried to help us with our train reservation for the next day before she left us at our hotel at the end of a perfectly delightful day. We want to thank Susanne and the very good driver for a beautiful experience in the Asti, Barollo and Alba area. We would highly recommend this tour (with Susanne and the driver) to anyone. It was the highlight of our trip to Italy. Thank you so very much. Sheila & Terry Dexter
Susanne is a delightful young woman, very knowledgable, and the driver, Beppi (???) was competent and very pleasant. The day was a little damp - we cannot blame Susanne for the weather - but this did not dampen our enjoyment. The truffle hunter (Natale) is a lovely man, and a fantastic host. Asti is a beautiful city and the tour of Braida winery was excellent. All-in-all very good value and an unforgettable experience.
