Embark on a voyage through the history of wine and cheese, while exploring the medieval streets of Venice’s Rialto neighborhood. The tour ends with a wine and cheese tasting at a local osteria
Discover new flavors and a different concept of time on this walking tour of Venice’s lively Rialto neighborhood. Center of the food trade for many centuries, and even now, filled with delis, shops and wine bars where you can taste local delicacies, cheese and wine chief among them, you will be introduced to the unique way of life of these gastronomic artisans.
The tour starts with historical evidence of the casaria (places where cheese vendors once worked), followed by a stop at the best contemporary cheese shop. You will visit the neighborhood church where the Guild of Cheesemongers used to pray for protection from St. Bartholomew the Apostle, their patron saint. Nearby is a tiny stall where you can purchase vacuum-packed Parmigiano, ready to be taken home in your suitcase.
You will be guided among the various osterie, cozy wine bars that line the streets of the Rialto area; some more modern, some more traditional but all eager to share their love for local wines and freshly-made appetizers. At the end of your walk through the intricate network of medieval streets, you will sit down for a tasting of four different cheeses (for example, Asiago, Gorgonzola, Pecorino and a goat cheese), paired with a glass of Soave white wine or Merlot red wine.
