Explore the vibrant Testaccio food scene on this 4-hour small group walking tour. You'll be sampling everything from classic Italian dishes to a typical Roman street food while exploring the city.
This 4-hour, small group food tour provides excellent insight into the ancient neighborhood of Testaccio, located south of the Aventine Hill, right along the Tiber River. Testaccio is not well known among tourists, but has an unusual history which brings one back to when grain, olive oil and other foods were brought to Rome in amphorae. This neighborhood also has a wonderful market and, most importantly, an amazing food scene.
You will explore the area, indulging in food tastings along the way at nine of Testaccio's most historic and locally loved places. As you follow your friendly and knowledgeable guide, you will also get a glimpse of the daily life of the families who live in the neighborhood.
First stop on this tour is a historic salumeria that boasts hundreds of varieties of cheese, an awe-inspiring selection of cured meats, top quality oils and much more. Next stop on this tour will be a trattoria. In this atmospheric setting built into the side of Monte Testaccio, you'll sample some classic Roman dishes, all prepared with the freshest available ingredients.
After the second tasting, it is time to move on and savor the best street food of Rome prepared in a really tiny shop. You will taste a trapizzino, a triangular pocket of pizza dough filled with some classic Roman ingredients and a fried rice ball called suppli'. You'll love it!
Next stop is a pizza al taglio place and then it's time to take a stroll through Testaccio's wonderful food market. Three more tastings await you; on your way to these other shops, you will pass by Rome's only Pyramid, John Keats' mysterious tomb and the birthplace of Rome's mob gang. To conclude this unforgettable gastronomic experience, a tasty artisanal tiramisu provides a sweet finish to this foodie tour of Testaccio.
This small group gastronomic tour includes all 12 food-tastings and an English-speaking guide, who will highlight some of the cities best places to eat.
Participants on this tour are both Select Italy and non-Select Italy clients. Maximum number of participants is 12.
