No visit to Sorrento or the Amalfi Coast is complete without a taste of the local specialty cheeses, from mozzarella to caviocavallo to provolone. Using traditional methods and family recipes, small cheese-making factories (caseifici) continue the work of previous generations, producing some of the world's favorite cheeses from one of Italy's most beloved destinations. Caseificio Michelangelo is one such factory, and its visitors have the chance to discover for themselves the magic of Campanian cheeses.

Your journey through the scrumptious process of cheese-making begins when you are picked up at your hotel on the Sorrentine Peninsula and taken to the family-owned cheese factory at Piano di Sorrento. Caseificio Michelangelo began making scamorza in the mid-1940's and they have expanded their repertoire and reputation since. You will learn first-hand how these artisan products are created with a step-by-step demonstration, beginning with the first drop of the finest milk and finishing with the final piece of Campanian perfection, ready for enjoyment.

Following the factory tour and demonstration, you will savor various specialty cheeses made on-site - including mozzarella, ricotta, "Moscione", and Provolone del Monaco - while also sampling local wine from the region. Before returning to your hotel, you will have the opportunity to purchase any of the delicious specialties that you saw being made that day.

Your tasting includes the following nine cheeses: bits of mozzarella or bocconcini, smoked bits of mozzarella or ciliegine, caciottine, ricotta, slices of aged and smoked Caciocavallo, Moscione, a slice of Provolone del Monaco and Bruschetta with fresh butter. Bread, water and wine are served as well.

The demonstration and tasting takes place near Sorrento and lasts approximately 1.5 hours. Transportation to and from your hotel on the Sorrentine Peninsula is included in the price. Please contact us for transportation quotes from other locations.
