Basilicata is the perfect setting for this unforgettable culinary and wine experience: the genuine flavors, the indigenous grapes, the taste of the food and the friendly people combine to make this a memorable taste adventure. Your assistant for the day will guide you through this beautiful region and its pristine natural beauties. This ancient land boasts centuries-old vineyards that produce the famous Primitivo and Aglianico wines that are increasingly being singled out by wine experts for their structure and ability to age.
Departing from and returning to your Matera hotel, first stop is the town of Venosa. This charming town is dotted with churches like the stunning Abbey of SS. Trinita' or the Baroque church of the Purgatory, and at the heart of the town you will find the imposing Norman Castel of Venosa. After a walking tour through the city center, you will stop at a local winery: a visit to the cellars and a guided wine tasting are included. Next comes lunch, with a variety of local snacks and healthy and delicious dishes, typical of the cucina povera from Basilicata.
After lunch, the experience will conclude with a tour of Melfi, a small town full of history. You will visit the imposing 11th-century Norman-Swabian Castle built at the foot of the Vulture Mountain, a strategic location that served as a gateway between Campania and Apulia. The eastern slopes of Vulture around the towns of Barile and Melfi are the sites of the best Aglianico vineyards.

We had a great guide, Dora, for this trip. A native of Matera, Dora gave us many insights into the history and culture of this ancient land. All the sights we saw were indeed fascinating and the winery in Venosa was marvelous. We regretted not to have the energy, due to illness, to see the castle completely. Lunch was at Grotta Azzura in Melfi and was superb. Fascinating places, superb guide.
