Archi-Wine Tour: When Architects Meet Winemakers in Umbria (Full Day)

Archi-Wine Tour: When Architects Meet Winemakers in Umbria (Full Day)

  • City: Montefalco
  • Duration: Approximately 11 hours

This tour departs from Perugia or Assisi and ensures a complete wine-tasting experience, with a visit to a remarkable wine cellar designed by Arnaldo Pomodoro, Italy's greatest contemporary sculptor.

Overview

Whether you love red, white or dessert wine, this tour is for you. Montefalco is a majestic hill town in the central part of the province of Perugia, often referred to as the "balcony of Umbria," and home of Sagrantino di Montefalco, one of Italy's most prestigious DOCG wines. This tour departs from Perugia or Assisi and ensures a complete wine-tasting experience, along with a visit to an absolutely unique wine cellar designed by Arnaldo Pomodoro, Italy's greatest contemporary sculptor.

Architecture and sculpture unite in Carapace, Pomodoro's fantastic copper and wood structure whose curved outline is visible from miles away. It is the centerpiece of the Tenuta di Castelbuono winery and was inspired by the natural armor of a turtle's hard shell. Carapace harmonizes perfectly with the surrounding landscape of rolling hills and organic vineyards planted with sagrantino and sangiovese grapes. Inside is a copper-sheathed tasting room where you'll get to sample the estate's fine wines.

Next comes a visit to the charming town of Montefalco, followed by lunch at Enoteca L'Alchimista. This lively restaurant in the center of the town is well known for its warm and inviting atmosphere. A guided tour of the medieval village of Castel Ritaldi follows a lunch of Umbrian specialties. Located at the foot of the Martani Hills on the road to Spoleto, the village contains several interesting churches, in addition to the castle after which it is named.

Final stop is Tenuta di Scacciadiavoli, founded by Prince Ugo Boncompagni-Ludovisi in 1884. This winery is one of Montefalco's oldest and boasts 20 hectares of vineyards, 11 of which are reserved for Sagrantino di Montefalco, six for Montefalco Rosso and three for Grechetto vines.
