Immerse yourself for a couple of hours in the fascinating time capsule that is Palazzo Vecchio. Begun at the end of the 13th century, this imposing stone fortress housed Florence's city government for over 700 years. This small group tour will begin in the archaeological excavations underneath the palace where the ancient theater of the Roman colony Florentia can be admired.
The tour continues with the impressive Salone dei Cinquecento, built during the Republic of Girolamo Savonarola (1495-98) to house Florence?s 500 member Grand Council. It was later transformed by Vasari with wall frescoes and a magnificent, coffered wooden ceiling that is richly painted and gilded. Before moving on, you will explore other rooms on the first floor dedicated to the ruling Medici family.
On the second floor you will see Dante's death mask and the private, residential part of the palace: the elegant "Quarter of the Elements" and the Apartments of Eleonora of Toledo. The visit will continue with the enchanting Cappella dei Priori (Prior's Chapel) and another Renaissance room, the Sala dei Gigli, decorated with golden lilies and frescoes dating back to the 15th century.
Finally, you will climb to the topmost battlements of the tower by taking the stairs - 416 steps in all - to enjoy a breathtaking view of Florence and its surrounding hills from a height of 310 feet.
