  • Teatro Massimo Nita (Wellington, - new Zealand)

Received tickets in a timely manner.

  • Teatro Massimo manana dadiani (Tbilisi, - Georgia)

Theater is luxurious! But...the ventilation system wasn't regulated properly.

  • Turandot - Great opera Ron B. (Media, PA - PA USA)

It was a spectacular evening in Palermo. We were a few minutes late for the opening curtain, due to some bad weather that tied up our tour bus; plus a very long wait for a train passing one of our intersections. But our tour guide called the director of Teatro Massimo and squeezed all 27 of us into the Royal Box, up one level and right in the center. We had learned, from a tour of the theater, when we picked up the tickets, that there were only 27 seats in that special box. We just fit for all of the first act. Had to come down to our regular, very good seats, for the rest of the performance. The seats are like small living room chairs, quite comfortable, and covered in a soft, peach red fabric. The color and staging were spectacular. Only unbelievable element was fact that the poverty stricken Calaf was dressed in opulent, shining silks. All the performers were in good voice. A bevy of very beautiful Chinese dancers, all evenly proportioned, look-a-likes, dressed in sultry laces took everyone's breath away. Most clever dramatic device was a large delicately laced white fan that opened out over of Liu's dead body, then rose gracefully to the ceiling, revealing that the sacrificed body of the innocent lover had ascended into the heavens. Thanks for making it all work out for us.

About the Theater

After 25 years of restoration, the 19th century Teatro Massimo reopened its doors in May 1997 to much fanfare. In its early days, the theatre was one of the largest in Europe with a capacity for 3,200 spectators. It was an appropriately grand venue for the great tenor Enrico Caruso, whose career took off here. Today's regulations allow only about 1,350 in the audience, but the Massimo is no less beloved. In Europe, Teatro Massimo represents the high point of the typical Italian-style theatre. The atmosphere of the theatre, with its color scheme of sumptuous gold and red, is surpassed only by its sight lines and acoustics, to this day considered among the best in all of Europe. Though its history is full of political scandals and corruption - mostly surrounding the original construction in the late 1800s and its re-construction in the 1970s and 80s - Teatro Massimo bears witness to Palermo's progressive artistic rehabilitation.
