Operas are typically performed in their original language with Italian subtitles. Get the full story before the opera! Select Italy offers a variety of libretti in English to complement your opera tickets.
Dress nicely for Italian musical events. You may be turned away if you are dressed too casually. Opening night opera performances require a full dark suit for men, an elegant dress for ladies.
Operas, ballets and concerts can run anywhere from 1.5 to 3+ hours. Consider your evening transportation options for returning to your hotel. Some trains or public transportation may not be available after 10:30 pm.

A memory for life! The opera "Tosca" was fantastic, the service, location and atmosphere was above expectation.
Ticket service was excellent as was the opera. Unfortunately it was interrupted twice by rain, the second time just before the final aria when large numbers of us decided to abandon ship. Not sure if you have any influence with the Italian authorities but road signage from Lucca, where I imagine many opera-goers take accommodation, could be improved significantly.
The opera was wonderful - the tickets were waiting for us as promised and we had wonderful seats- The location and whole experience will not be forgotten !
I attended the Puccini Festival on a Summer Enrichment Grant from my elementary school in Nashville and my husband who also loves opera came along. I was so pleased and everything was beyond my most imagined dreams. The performers, sets, choreography, orchestra and maestra were so special. It was so obvious how much the orchestra members loved their maestra - she was so good. We had threatening looking clouds above our heads but only a few drops of rain spilled out and the performance went on with grandiose style. TURANDOT is one of my favorites as was the opening night of LA BOHEME. Thank you for your help with tickets which I order in January - they were right there at the will call office when I arrived to retrieve them. Grazie! Molte grazie! Tutto va bene. Barbara Sanders
The Puccini opera festival was excellent and the hotel couldn't have been better located.
The Puccini Festival of Torre del Lago is the best opportunity to experience the very atmosphere that inspired the great composer Giacomo Puccini, who settled in this rural landscape from 1891. The lake and salt marsh that surround the city hide a world full of incomparable beauty. The Festival was created in 1930, in accordance with Puccini's wishes. In November 1924, in a letter addressed to Giovacchino Forzano, Puccini wrote: "I always come out here and take a boat to go snipe shooting... but just once I would like come here and listen to one of my operas in the open air." This statement remained so impressed in Forzano's heart, he put Puccini's wish into practice six years after the composer's death. Together with Pietro Mascagni - who had studied and shared a room with young Puccini - Forzano started the Puccini Festival. Because Torre del Lago is just west of Lucca and immediately south of Viareggio on the coast, it is an easy trip from Lucca, Pisa and Florence. The Festival continues to host some of the most famous and important names in the opera world, creating a truly unforgettable and distinctly Puccinian experience in the Tuscan countryside.
