Synopsis: Although numerous operas have been produced based on the story, Puccini’s is by far the most well known. MANON, a beautiful young woman, meets a student, DES GRIEUX, and falls in love. Unfortunately, the rich general GERONTE also desires Manon and convinces her to be with him for the prestige. Des Grieux sneaks into Geronte’s home where he and Manon, unable to control her desire, declare their love. Geronte discovers them and has Manon arrested. As she’s about to be deported to New Orleans with other criminals, Des Grieux convinces a guard to let him join her. As the two are deposited in an abandoned plain, they struggle for food and water. Exhausted and hungry, Manon dies, while the grief-stricken Des Grieux collapses on her corpse.
