    The Scrovegni Chapel

The Scrovegni Chapel

  • City Padua

For the ultimate Giotto experience, do not miss the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua.

Overview

The Scrovegni Chapel in Padua, also referred to as the Arena Chapel because it is built on the site of an ancient Roman amphitheater, contains a remarkable series of fresco paintings that are landmarks in the history of Western art. Executed by the Tuscan painter Giotto from 1300-05, the events portrayed here represent the lives of the Virgin Mary and Christ in an accessible, down-to-earth way that merges the concepts of humanity and faith.

The chapel has a very simple architecture, but Giotto's masterful ability in the use of color, light, and the representation of solid forms, coupled with his new style of showing true human emotion in a realistic way, became the precursor for the Italian Renaissance art that followed. Originally attached to the Scrovegni family palace, the chapel's end wall is an immense "Last Judgment" fresco in which Enrico Scrovegni himself is depicted presenting a model of the chapel to Mary. The organization of this scene influenced the great Michelangelo in his "Last Judgment" (1536-41) for the Sistine Chapel.

Please note that the entrance ticket to the Scrovegni Chapel also includes admission to the City Museum Eremitani and the Zuckermann Palace.
