Get acquainted with the basics of Sicilian cuisine by visiting Palermo’s famous food market. Afterwards, you will cook a four-course meal with the help of an expert Italian chef.
The Sicilian culinary tradition reflects the island's history of colonization. Sicily was subject to many invasions in the course of history and each invader brought along its own cuisine. Greek, Arab, Spanish, Norman and French roots can be discovered in ingredients such as capers, almonds, olives, citrus, oregano, hard durum wheat, wild fennel and sea salt, while many of the island's wines are made with grape varietals found only in Sicily.
You will discover the fascinating secrets of the Sicilian culinary tradition in the kitchen of the Duchess of Palma through a praised cooking class that was recently featured in La Cucina Italiana. Her family palace, the Palazzo Lanza Tomasi, is an extraordinary location because it was once the residence of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, the last Prince of Lampedusa; he wrote Il Gattopardo (The Leopard), a masterpiece of Italian literature.
You will meet the duchess and the other participants of the class at the palace and then you will head all together to Palermo's oldest outdoor food market - the colorful Capo market. Here you will discover some typical Sicilian products, including the freshest fish and meat, and the best seasonal vegetables to be used in your cooking class.
Once the shopping has been done, you will start your hands-on cooking class in the spacious and welcoming kitchen of the Palazzo where you will cook a four-courses Sicilian meal under the duchess' guidance, while listening to her entertaining stories. Lunch paired with Sicilian wines such as Tasca d'Almerita's Sallier de la Tour follows in the elegant dining room, and your culinary experience concludes with a relaxing, digestive walk through the historic Palazzo in the company of the duke and duchess.
