So what can you expect from a visit to this enchanting place, sandwiched between the Julian Alps, the Slovenian border and the Adriatic Sea? The first is <\/span><b>accessibility<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Trieste is just 100 miles east of Venice, with frequent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">train service<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to get you there in only two hours. One excellent reason to go is to spend a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">night at the opera. The exquisite Teatro Verdi<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a late eighteenth-century gem that is a mixture of Venice\u2019s La Fenice on the inside and La Scala in Milan on the exterior, and its acoustics are wonderful! Book a room in a 4-star hotel such as the historic <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continentale<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or the more contemporary <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Palace Suite<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, installed in one of Northern Italy&#8217;s finest Art Nouveau buildings; both are within easy walking distance of the opera house.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What to See in Trieste<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second is <\/span><b>history in a setting of uncontaminated nature<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miramare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a 19th-century Habsburg castle right outside Trieste, is breathtakingly perched right above the Adriatic Sea and has been designated a Natural Marine Reserve by the WWF for the pristine quality of its waters. The city was officially annexed by the Habsburg Empire in 1509, and Viennese architecture and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">coffee houses<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> dominate Trieste to this day. A building not to be missed is the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jewish Temple<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one of the finest synagogues in existence. Inspired by the ruins of ancient Baalbek in Lebanon, it was built in 1910 and boasts an imposing organ, plus a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mikveh<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (ritual bath) in the basement. And the third Sunday of each month the streets of Trieste&#8217;s former Jewish ghetto come alive with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">huge antiques mar<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">k<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">et<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is not uncommon to come across treasures like Biedermeier furniture, Bohemian crystal, Viennese porcelain and rustic objects from Carso region of the Friuli. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Trieste&#8217;s Food &amp; Wine<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visitors to Trieste are also amazed by the <\/span><b>vast choice of food and wine<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the city has to offer; not just spaghetti and pizza but a cosmopolitan cuisine that\u2019s a fascinating mix of Hungarian, Slavic, German and Italian traditions and can be savored in characteristic restaurants like the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Antica Trattoria Suban<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Wash it all down with a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">world-class Friulian wine\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that can stand up to the very best vintages of Piedmont and Tuscany. Here in the Friuli region, the vineyards are interspersed with fortified castles and onion-domed bell towers, a visible reminder that the Slovenian border is only a few miles away. Whole hams with the trotter still attached are a familiar sight here and can be sampled at one of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than a dozen &#8220;ham bars&#8221;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scattered around town. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ham fans won\u2019t want to miss the annual food festival in honor of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prosciutto di San Daniele<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, held at the end of June. Called <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ariadifriuliveneziagiulia.it\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aria di Festa<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">it runs from June 24<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to 27<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">th,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 2016 and attracts some big international names: no less than Bob Dylan kicked off his Italian tour at last year\u2019s festival! San Daniele del Friuli is also the gateway to the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.turismofvg.it\/Carnia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carnia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the glorious Julian Alps, a hiker&#8217;s paradise of trails winding through untouched forests and alpine pastures of abundant wild flowers.
