You would never guess that being bitten by a spider could be fun! Let us Italians show you how with an event that you won’t want to miss: “La Notte della Taranta” (Night of the Taranta). One of Italy’s biggest festivals and Europe’s most important traditional cultural events is coming to the US and with Select Italy you can win free tickets for one of two nights in New York City!

During the event you will have the chance to enjoy the fast-tempo and powerful rhythms of one of the greatest traditional folk music pieces of all time, la Pizzica (which translates literally into “itch, bite, sting”), created centuries ago in Puglia (aka Apulia, the region that forms the heel of the Italian “boot.”). It was developed to honor the phenomenon of the tarantismo when Pugliese women, believed to to have been bitten by a spider (tarantula), had to dance to the rhythms of pizzica songs for days in order to expel the poison and recover.
