The Grand Hotel de la Minerve was built in 1620 for the aristocratic Fonseca family. Since the end of the 1700's the building has been used as a hotel and has hosted illustrious guests like Stendhal, George Sand and Carlotta, the last Empress of Mexico. Its privileged position directly behind the Pantheon, within walking distance of all of Rome's most famous monuments, makes the Grand Hotel de la Minerve the best located of all the city's 5-star luxury hotels.
In 1891 a Winter Garden with a beautiful stained-glass roof was built in the inner courtyard of the hotel. Dominated by a statue of the goddess "Minerva" framed in the central niche, the age-old tradition of afternoon tea to the accompaniment of soft piano music continues to be observed here today.
Each of the 135 air-conditioned guestrooms and Suites is unique in size and decor. They effortlessly combine a mix of modern and antique furnishings, and have been recently upgraded to suit sophisticated 21st century tastes. The marble bathrooms have combination tub/showers and an additional phone. Other amenities include high-speed Internet, mini-bar, in-room safe and satellite TV. The 860-square foot Stendhal Suite features original fresco paintings, arched ceilings and a jacuzzi-type whirlpool bath.
The Ristorante La Cesta serves excellent and imaginative Mediterranean cuisine, accompanied by an extensive wine list. During the summer months the restaurant moves up to the Roof Garden where guests can enjoy a magnificent, panoramic view of Rome that extends from the Campidoglio to the dome of St. Peter's. Le Cupole, the hotel bar, is an elegant space with vaulted ceilings -- the ideal setting for a relaxing drink.
