A 20-minute drive from Volterra and San Gimignano is a community of international artists and nature lovers called Borgo Pignano. The estates' heart is an 18th-century villa that has been completely remodeled to host guestrooms and suites, as well as common areas including a large ballroom with balconies, a library, a music room, several dens with fireplaces, a dining room, a small movie theater, a pool/billiard room, a children's play room, and a space dedicated to holistic practices like yoga and meditation. Breathtaking views in every direction encompass rolling Tuscan hills and verdant valleys that stretch all the way to the sea.
The 14 guestrooms and suites in the main villa, each with splendid views, are furnished with elegance and artistic flair. Some still boast original frescoes while all the bathrooms are faced in travertine or marble. Another option is to rent one of the apartments or freestanding houses like Podere la Fonte (a farmhouse with seven bedrooms, and a terrace by the lake) and Casa del Lago (a small isolated house on the lake, ideal for honeymooners). A perk that everyone will appreciate is the free Wi-Fi that can be accessed from anywhere on the estate.
All guests can enjoy the panoramic infinity pool, carved from an old limestone quarry, as well as the bocce court and the various indoor areas set aside for yoga or playing music. Classes are offered for those who want them and children are welcome, too. There are plentiful options for kids to take classes, or have a sitter look after them while their parents spend some time by themselves.
Food at Borgo Pignano is sourced as much as possible from the estate and neighboring farms, and is based on organic or biodynamic principles of agriculture. Breakfast breads, croissants, and pastries are baked in the wood-burning oven and accompanied by jams, honey, fruits, yogurt, Italian coffees, English teas, and organic milk. At lunch, guests can avail themselves of an ample buffet, while dinner is centered on delicious Tuscan specialties prepared by Chef Camilla (she also gives cooking classes). Special theme dinners include pizza night and outdoor barbeques.
