Yes, but only if you have an unlocked GSM 900/1800 compatible cell phone (most T-Mobile and AT&T customers), or a so-called
dual system (PCS/GSM)
cell phone with an activated international calling plan (most Verizon and Sprint customers).
Call your cell service provider and they should be able to provide you this information. Most likely they will ask what brand and model
your cell phone is. Alternatively, refer to the user manual that came with your cell phone when you purchased it.
Call your cell service provider to find out whether your phone is unlocked or not.
To unlock your cell phone and to enable it for international use, you have to call your cell service provider
and request unlocking your phone. You can say something like
"I plan to travel to Italy and I would like to unlock my phone so I
could use it during my trip". Usually it takes anywhere from 1 to 3 business days to process your request,
depending on a specific provider. This service is usually free of charge. Remember, you have to unlock your phone BEFORE leaving the country.
Activate your Italian SIM card
Important: SIM cards MUST be activated BEFORE leaving the country!
You will need to provide a scan of your passport, your invoice number, Italy cell phone number, ICCID number, address and a
signed terms of use. Please consult our
User's Guide for further details.
Replace your existing SIM card with the Italian SIM card
If you already have an unlocked cell phone, all you have to do is replace the existing SIM
Card with the activated Italian SIM Card. Substitution of the SIM Card provides you with a local phone number and
with much more economical local rates. By pre-purchasing a SIM Card from Select Italy, your phone will be ready to receive or make calls or text messages the
moment you arrive in Italy; you'll also have the number beforehand to leave with friends and relatives so you'll always be in touch.
To add airtime to your Italian SIM card, you will need to purchase
RICARICard airtime cards that you can
find at most newsstands,
bar/tabacchi and gas stations, conveniently located throughout Italy. They are available
in €3, €10, €25 and €50 denominations.
RICARICard airtime vouchers are available at face
value, so a €3 airtime voucher will cost you €3 and subsequently will credit your Italy SIM card with €3.
After you purchase
RICARICard follow the steps below:
- Scratch off the protective layer to reveal your recharge voucher code
- Dial 4916 from your mobile phone
- Press 4 to recharge
- Press 1 to select the RICARICard recharge option
- Enter your 16-digit code when prompted
- The number will be repeated back to you
- Press 8 to confirm
Now your phone is ready to make and receive calls!
