The Medici Chapels, attached to the apse of the church of San Lorenzo, consist of two distinct spaces containing Medici family tombs from the 16th and 17th centuries. The Chapel of the Princes, designed by Don Giovanni de' Medici, was begun in 1604 by Matteo Nigetti, and completed by Buontalenti, who made major alterations to the original design. Michelangelo left the New Sacristy incomplete in 1534 when he left Florence for the last time. He was able to finish only two of the tombs, the Tomb of Lorenzo, Duke of Urbino, and the Tomb of Giuliano de' Nemours, which include his well-known sculptures of Night, Day, Dawn, and Dusk.
