Sicily was an emirate of Africa when, at then end of the 11th century, the Normans occupied the island and made Palermo the capital of their kingdom and seat of the king. Rather than expel the Arabs, the newcomers collaborated with them to build graceful churches and palaces in a style known today as Arab-Norman. The tour will start from the Cathedral, originally constructed by the Normans but with an interior that was completely rebuilt at the end of 18th century. Next stop is the Palazzo Reale, also known as Palazzo dei Normanni; inside is the Cappella Palatina, a little jewel box and one of the most beautiful royal chapels in the world. From there we will proceed to the nearby church of San Giovanni degli Eremiti, characterized by five red domes. After crossing the old Albergheria quarter which boasts the colorful Ballaṛ market, similar to an Arabic Suk, we will visit the church of the Martorana with its mix of Norman and Baroque styles. Nearby is the small Norman church of San Cataldo. The tour ends in Piazza Bellini.
