Medieval Florence & Its Urban Design 1:32 |
Select Italy's Honors & Awards: |
Ideal as an introduction to the splendor of Florence, this half day tour is perfect for those with either a limited amount of time or who just want to get the basics. Fiorenza - 'The City of Flowers' - was originally a Roman military camp on the banks of the Arno River. In the 11th century the city was completely encircled by high stone walls to keep out invaders and many Florentines built fortified 'tower-houses' that soared almost a hundred feet into the air. Remnants of the Roman and medieval past are still visible today. The tour will begin in the Piazza della Repubblica, site of the Forum in ancient times, from which we will explore the many picturesque corners of the centro storico including: Piazza del Duomo, with its gaily colored marble-clad cathedral and baptistery; Orsanmichele, once a grain market, the exterior of which is adorned with masterpieces of Renaissance sculpture; the poet Dante's house and the little chapel where he first saw his beloved Beatrice; and the Piazza della Signoria whose form is the result of a 13th century family feud. The tour ends in the majestic spaces of the Franciscan Basilica of Santa Croce, a veritable Pantheon of famous Florentines housing the tombs of Michelangelo, Galileo and Machiavelli.
