Our guide, Giovanna, who is a researcher at the Vatican library, was exactly the right person for us. she was scholarly without being ponderous, and helped us understand the overwhelming art we were looking at. She brought a sense of dignity and commitment to the place and to the art. we were grateful for her insight and presence. Although it was expensive, it was certainly worth using the guided tour. The fact that we didn't have to wait on a long line also helped.
