Opera's Origins
Opera's roots lie in the lavish creativity of Florence during the Italian
Renaissance. The term opera comes from the Italian phrase 'opera in musica'
meaning `a musical work.' In the last decade of the 16th century, a group of
artists, musicians and poets called the 'Florentine Camerata' met together
to discuss artistic trends and to promote a revival of Greek drama. Thus,
opera was born. The very first opera, Dafne (1597), was written by Italian
composer Jacopo Peri in collaboration with Italian poet Ottavio Rinnucini.
Over the last 400 years, new operas have been created both in Italy and all
