Buongiorno! My name is Alessandro and I am an intern in the Sales and Operations department at the Select Italy Chicago office.
2. What’s your favorite Italian destination?
As a student at Ca’ Foscari University in Venice, I obviously fell in love with the “city on the water.” Venice is probably one of the very few places where, when getting lost (which happens to everyone, even Venetians themselves) you may discover authentic treasures. However, I am from Friuli-Venezia Giulia and unfortunately, not many people are aware of the beauties that this tiny region can offer. Among these, I am fond of Sauris, a cute mountain village that is the perfect choice for food lovers–an amazing smoked prosciutto and delicious handcrafted beer are Sauris’ delicacies. Due to its physical gifts, this village attracts mountain-sport enthusiasts too.
3. Whom would you go there with?
The company of my good friends would be perfect for excellent food and great open-air activities.
4. Which 3 things should never be missing from one’s luggage when traveling to Italy?
- Any traveler should always have a pair of comfortable sneakers while in Italy. It does not matter which city, village or borgo you are going to visit, roaming around on foot is always the best and cheapest way to discover what your destination can offer.
- A few Italian ready-made phrases or a pocket Italian phrase book for last-minute travelers won’t weight too much in your luggage but will definitely be useful. Introducing yourself to a few Italian words like – like “Buongiorno, come sta?” (Good morning, how are you?) or even “Scusi, non parlo italiano” (I’m sorry but I don’t speak Italian) will allow you to catch your interlocutor’s attention and liking.
- Last but not least remember an extra battery for your camera or phone: very few things are worse than having your camera run out of battery while taking pictures of a breathtaking panorama. I would also suggest a plug adapter.
5. What Italian food are you addicted to?
Obviously the toughest question comes at last! Well, for me the perfect meal would be a huge pizza with anchovies and fresh basil leaves on top baked in a wood oven. The best one I’ve ever had was in Napoli. For dessert nothing is better than a bowl of fresh in-season fruit lying on a bed of refreshing artisanal gelato. Yummy!

A tip not only for food lovers but also for anyone who would like to experience a real taste of Italy: enjoy local food! Italy is much more than just pizza and pasta. From the top of the hills of Friuli-Venezia Giulia to the heel of Puglia, there are plenty of local specialties that will change the way you view Italian food forever.
