Art. Theatre. Wine. Not interested? No problem, Italy’s still got you covered. Known to most for its elegant cuisine and historic masterpieces, Italy isn’t exactly the first thought that comes to mind if you’re hobbies consist of jumping out of airplanes, rock climbing, and camping out in the middle of the woods. However, from one adventurer to another, let me assure you – Italy is perfect for the modern outdoorsman (or woman). You’ll find most of the action in Sardinia, a large island in the southwest region of Italy. Make sure you grab a parachute and some matches because here are five great things not to miss in Sardinia.
One fishing trip here and you’ll never want to catch fish in Wisconsin again. The beautiful Mediterranean weather here means cool waters and a great selection of different aquatic life that you’ll want to reel in. Should you plan on vacationing to Sardinia, make sure you check out Hotel Cala di Volpe, a gorgeous resort that was designed to emulate a fishing village.
Tips- Get the weather report before you head out. Generally the climate is perfect, however, the island experiences high winds between September to April.
2. Horseback Riding
Arguably, you could probably ride a horse in a lot of different European hotspots, however, I doubt you’ll be able to find horses who will take you up and around the highest mountains as well as areas that cannot be reached by car. The Gennargentu mountain range is one of the last regions in Europe that still has free-roaming horses.
Tips – Courses are set up for different skill levels and will range from beginner and intermediate to advanced and expert.
Strap on your boots and walk through some of the most beautiful trails in the world. Sardinia’s unique terrain ensures that no two trails will look, or feel, the same. Breathtaking panoramic views are around every corner and, if you’re a more experienced hiker, you’ll find that nothing can top the beauty of Sardinia at sunset – from the top of a cliff.
Tips – Trails range from beginner to expert so make sure that you do a little research before you start hiking. Expert hikers will definitely want to visit the Orosei Golf, a gorgeous locale that is situated on the Eastern coast of Sardinia.
Sailing is one of the most popular pastimes in Sardinia. You can see the Sardinian coast in a variety of different sailboats or simply grab a drink and unwind as you bask in the sun. Whether you’re looking for adventure or relaxation, sailing is one of your best bets in Sardinia.
Tips- Make sure you find a qualified skipper if you’re new to sailing as some waters are less negotiable than others.
5. Scuba Diving
Gorgeous beaches and sparkling crystal waters surround Sardinia but, believe it or not, you’ll find the best views underneath the sea. It’s a safe bet that, if adventure is your thing, you’ll love scuba diving in Sardinia. Sure you can find the regular set of fins and snorkel diving experience anywhere, but name another place in the world that will take you through underwater caverns, corals, and shipwrecks.
Tips – Sardinia’s aquatic life is pretty safe and you won’t really find any dangerous creatures like sharks or stingrays, however, make sure that you’re comfortable with swimming underwater before you head out. Check out Hotel Cala Caterina if you’re planning to scuba dive in Sardinia.
