1. Name and What do you do at Select Italy?
My name is Paige and I am an intern at Select Italy in Chicago.
2. What’s your favorite Italian destination?
In the spring of 2012, I studied abroad in Rome and absolutely fell in love with the city. There is something special about a modern and massive city functioning in between ancient archeological sites; Rome is truly one of a kind.
For a quieter getaway, I love to indulge myself in the Italian Alps. The skiing is very nice and there are many small resorts that you can explore. After the ski season, you can hike in the morning, have a good lunch of polenta, and in the afternoon you should relax in the hot springs. It is very beautiful, quiet, and fun year-around. Merano, Bormio, and Val Gardena are some of my favorite areas but there are many other mountains to explore.
3. Whom would you go there with?
I would bring my friends to Rome but I would prefer to go to the mountains with my family to relax.
4. Which 3 things should never be missing from one’s luggage when traveling to Italy?
A digital camera is always a necessity but what happens when the battery dies, it breaks, or you run out of memory? You should bring a disposable camera just in case something happens. Additionally, it is fun to not know what you are getting out of your pictures (there is no preview button, it is exciting).
I would bring a dictionary or Italian phrase book. This will be handy when asking for directions or especially at a restaurant. There might not be English copies of menus and a dictionary would be very helpful to order.
Extra space for food, wine, and cheese. There will be many delicacies that you come across and if you are able to take them home, it is worth a try.
5. What Italian food are you addicted to?
My favorite dish is spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams). It is a simple dish with a garlic-olive oil sauce but it is delicious. Also, I would eat prosciutto and melon everyday in the summer if I could.

If you travel to the small Tuscan town, Siena, try pici pasta with ragù sauce. It is very thick and long pasta that originates in Siena.
In Rome, you must go to a restaurant called Sora Margarita’s. It is located in the Jewish Ghetto and it is very good if you want to experience authentic Roman cuisine (make a reservation, it is small space).
Ask locals and Italians that you meet along your journey about places to see and eat. They are the ones that know best, do not be shy but always know your surroundings and use your best judgment.
