Nothing says summer quite like sitting in the grass and listening to live music. Fortunately, you won’t have to miss outdoor concerts and festivals during your summer vacation to Italy. From jazz to classical to rock, Italy boasts a number of music festivals to suit every taste.
1. Umbria Jazz Festival (Perugia) July 6 – 15
This festival draws musicians from all over the world. Besides the ticketed performances, visitors can enjoy live music in the streets of Perugia during the day. BB King, Melody Gardot, Herbie Hancock, Sergio Mendes, Prince and Santana are among the headliners for this festival, to name a few. If you’re not already staying in Perugia, the closest cities by train are Florence, Rome, Arezzo and Siena. Book your train tickets and accommodations ahead of time.
2. Festival Settimane Musicali di Stresa (Lake Maggiore, Stresa) July 20 – September 8
Founded in 1961 by a music-loving attorney, this classical music festival and competition hosts the best and brightest musicians and composers every summer. The exquisite setting of Lake Maggiore provides an unparalleled environment to enjoy the one of Europe’s most renowned, and one of the world’s most important, festivals. Concerts are held in castles, churches, theaters, villas and gardens around the Lake. Winners from international competitions are invited to play here every summer. The Bach Suite for Solo Cello is one of the most anticipated events, as it is played by a different, celebrated musician at the breathtaking Hermitage Santa Caterina.
3. Ferrara Sotto le Stelle (Ferrara) June – July
This festival is about an hour and twenty minutes from Venice and easily accessible by train from Rome and Florence. The event features some of the best names in indie rock, such as Bon Iver, Damian Rice and Afterhours and has been a mainstay in this city since 1996.
