When the announcement lit up Smartphones of receivers of news-update worldwide, initial reactions ranged from shock to betrayal to joy. But despite the variety of these emotional responses to a simple phrase such as CNN’s ten-word, Pope Benedict to resign at end of month, Vatican says, announcing the end of a papacy that has been relatively lackluster, most all opened their mouth for a shorter phrase to escape: Whhhhaaatttt? (or, in Italian, cooommmme maiiii??). This often followed by another didn’t see that one coming

The recent Feast of the Immaculate Conception on December 8 marks the start of Christmas season in Italy, and by now holiday cheer has come full force. Lights are strung, presepe are placed out for all to see, and Italians strolling the streets begin wishing each other merriment (read all about Italian Christmas traditions here). The words for these wishes are as lovely as the decorations themselves, and the musical sounds of the Italian language echo through the streets. Here is your guide to common Italian holiday words and phrases that you can use to fill the air (or to add a different musical quality to the season besides repeat radio Christmas music!)

Remember the saying, “You are what you eat?” I’d argue that it’s not just what you eat, but you are also what you speak. Think about it – language is not just words and grammar, but a reflection of culture. Trying to learn, understand, and use a language knowing nothing about a culture results in laughable misunderstandings and downright awkward situations. And some of the best pieces of language that reflect pieces of a culture are proverbs. It's no different for Italian - so this blog is going to examine some common Italian proverbs that provide us with insights into Italy and its people

Stroll down a street in Italy during the month of December and you will see a few things that are familiar to American Christmas: select stores will be dotted with wreaths, strings of lights may be strung across strade, and the occasional Santa Claus peeks out of the window. For anyone used to the United States' cup overfloweth-ing with Christmas decorations, lights, and music during the period between Thanksgiving and December 25, this might seem a bit scant. However, Italy's traditions are, in fact, rich and celebrate the season in their own special way. This post names but a few

I have been a fan of soccer since childhood, which in the US usually means that you played soccer for a few years and sat on the sidelines at your siblings' games. I learned that there was much more to being a “fan” when I began studying and traveling to Italy. There, soccer (aka calcio) is king; a sport in which athletes are paid more than American football players, national newspapers have almost as many soccer headlines as news headlines, and the fan base is literally die-hard. While in Italy, I attended a few soccer games, which turned out to be memorable experiences, but it wasn’t until I went to my first American MLS soccer game that I realized: on many different levels, calico in Italia and soccer in America are two different worlds

When someone mentions "Made in Italy," the mind almost automatically goes to fashionable clothing, luxurious accessories, and delicious food. It's safe to say that for a few, Italy is also synonym to “automakers.” However, those few are about to grow into many, thanks to FIAT, the biggest and oldest Italian automobile factory
